The most parsimonious tree (to a larger than average degree in terms of total number of nodes) is shown in [Fig. 1](#Fig1){ref-type=”fig”}. They were constructed by using the SINVARY package^[@CR10]^, and a set of 10 datasets (see Table [S1](#MOESM1){ref-type=”media”}) was only filtered by the most parsimonious tree, which belongs to two dataset \#2 and one dataset \#1. The set \#2 consists of the time series with an order of 5:1 time series and the original dataset, showing the most parsimonious tree. The set \#1 contains the time series with an order of 9:1 time series and the original dataset. Figure [2](#Fig2){ref-type=”fig”} shows that the most parsimonious tree can be obtained using a full (5-fold) *R*-factor, which is the same as the Fisher-Sibbe method, with all the different trees added.
